Blekinge Takes the Lead in Mission-Oriented Innovation
Through five pilot projects, Blekinge is leading the way in new mission-oriented innovations that can address global societal challenges.
Blekinge’s unique coastal landscape and geography provide excellent conditions for both blue and green industries.
The Blekinge Archipelago Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO designated area that aims to integrate sustainable development with the preservation of the unique natural and cultural values of Blekinge’s coastal landscape. The area serves as a model for how humans and nature can coexist sustainably. “We operate through a non-profit organization that functions as a platform for collaboration among all stakeholders in the area,” says Daniel Granello, coordinator of the Blekinge Archipelago Biosphere Reserve.
A KEY PART OF this work involves promoting local agriculture through the brand Jordmån Blekinge and raising awareness about sustainable food production.
THE BIOSPHERE RESERVE IS also involved in mussel farming in the archipelago, which helps clean the water and provides a base for locally produced animal feed, offering coastal fishermen an additional source of income. The goal is to contribute to a more sustainable fishing industry in the Baltic Sea by reducing overfishing and using mussel meal instead of fish meal as animal feed.
IN ADDITION TO these projects, the biosphere reserve focuses on restoring waterways and creating wetlands to promote fish ecosystems. Daniel also emphasizes the importance of international cooperation among biosphere reserves. “We have regular exchanges with actors in other biosphere reserves, both in Sweden and globally,” he says.
WITH BLEKINGE’S close proximity between stakeholders and strong entrepreneurial spirit, Daniel sees great potential for the region to lead the development of sustainable food production.
