Favorable Conditions Power Blekinge

Today, Blekinge is 30 percent self-sufficient in electricity, a figure the region is working to increase. Robert Hedman, energy strategist at Region Blekinge, explains: ”We have a clear understanding of the importance of energy for the green transition and business competitiveness, which is why we are driving several initiatives to increase the availability of fossil-free electricity both in the short and long term. We are working to ensure that our electricity networks never become an unexpected bottleneck.”'

KARLSKRONA IS one of the most important offshore ports in the Nordics, with constant loading of submarine cables by NKT. The ports of Karlshamn and SÖlvesborg are also well-equipped to play crucial roles as offshore wind power expands in the Baltic Sea. “Seven Swedish and European companies are planning wind farms off Blekinge’s coast, and potential investments are in the range of SEK 150–250 billxon. A single wind farm could generate electricity equivalent to two to six times Blekinge’s annual electricity needs,” says Robert.

THE RELATIVELY STRONG electricity grids offer excellent opportunities to connect both energy-intensive operations and new electricity production. According to Svenska Kraftnät, southeastern Sweden is one of the few areas where offshore wind power on a gigawatt scale can be connected relatively quickly, znd future investments could significantly increase capacity.
