Karlskrona – Centre for the World’s Most Important Challenges

Oskar Frånberg, Associate Professor in Marine Systems Engineering at BTH with over 15 years of experience from the Swedish Defence Research Agency, is not just a researcher – he is a visionary. As an entrepreneur and innovator, he has made it his mission to bring groundbreaking research from the lab into the real world. He stands at the forefront of the technological revolution in the defense sector, constantly seeking new ways to take innovations from the field, through the lab, and out into the market.

When he was offered a position at Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona in 2015, he didn’t hesitate for a moment. “Karlskrona is exactly the right place to tackle the three most critical global issues right now: energy, security, and sustainability,” states Oskar with conviction.

KARLSKRONA – HUB FOR FUTURE INDUSTRY Karlskrona is not only a charming coastal town; it is also home to some of Sweden’s most advanced companies, namely Saab Kockums, which manufactures everything from ships to submarines, and NKT, the world’s largest producer of electric cables. In addition, the city is an epicenter for massive investments – over SEK 140 billion in order volumes and more than SEK 20 billion in industrial investments. “We’ve already gone through the type of transformation that is now happening in northern Sweden. In the 1990s the tech boom created thousands of new jobs. Now we are facing a new wave of progress, where our IT expertise is linked with world-leading companies in energy, technology and security,” Oskar explains.

AN INNOVATIVE FUTURE – FROM IDEA TO REALITY In Karlskrona, the Marine Technology Center of Sweden (MTC), together with Blekinge Institute of Technology and a new research fund, is fueling success. Oskar describes the city as a hub for a new entrepreneurial spirit – a modern pioneering spirit where opportunities are there to be seized. “We have incredible testing facilities here. We can test any marine technology product, from the concept stage to full-scale tests.”

READY TO LEAD With his innovative mindset and keen eye for future possibilities, Oskar Frånberg sees Karlskrona as ready to lead the way toward a safer, more sustainable, and more energy-smart future.
